Livestock

The LVCF livestock group looks after the animals (of the 4 legged variety!) on the farm with the overall aim to provide meat for our members. Central to our aim is the desire to achive this by raising our animals in as natural a way as possible and to a high standard of animal welfare. The animals are raised free-range, so they have as much space as they need to exercise and exhibit their natural behaviour. As a group we use only rare-breed animals, as these are best suited to outdoor life, and will provide us with a high quality, and delicious product.

The first livestock which arrived on the farm were 9 Saddleback pigs. They arrived on the 25th July 2009 as 'weaners' (young pigs about 8 weeks old). They're coming along very well and are due to go for slaughter in the near future as 'porkers' - they shoud be around 65-70kg each at slaughter.

In the new year we're planning to expand the livestock side of the farm. We hope to increase the numbers of pigs we have, and also raise sheep for meat and goats for milk.
