Horticulture

The veg group at Loxley Valley Community Farm is made up of several members and directors who meet on a regular basis, with the aim of supplying seasonal veg throughout the year to share holders. We use both
common and heritage varieties to achieve this goal and use natural methods wherever possible (e.g. using horse manure as fertiliser). A veg share typically consists of a weekly box containing a variety of freshly harvested seasonal veg.

We have a main veg patch of more than 50m x 50m and have developed a crop rotation and planting plan.
We also have a green house, herb garden, several fruit trees and soft fruit including strawberries and raspberries. In the main veg patch we grow a large range of vegetables, including several varieties of potato, peas and beans, brassicas, legumes, onions, garlic, salads and many more. We have a number of varieties that over-winter and also continuously plant in order to harvest for as many weeks of the year as possible. We also use companion planting, sacrificial crops and green manures to make the best use of the land available and avoid pests.

Overall, we spend a lot of time planting, watering, weeding, harvesting and learning about veg. For more information about the veg at Loxley Valley Community Farm or to ask us a question please email veg@lvcf.org.uk.
